We landed in Santos, site of the largest naval base in the Pacific next to Pearl Harbor during the war II

We went horseback riding and made friends with the woman who owned the horse back riding facility

We had a lovely dinner overlooking the coral sea for Jim's birthday

It was a beautiful deserted tropical paradise

Of course Jim had to go diving on his birthday

We did a short dive on the wreck of the USS Coolidge, an ocean liner with 5000 men aboard when it hit a mine and sank – luckily the captain ran it up on shore and no lives were lost

There were coral encrusted rifles, gas masks and shells from war to scattered about the deck at 60 feet

We stayed with friends Jim and Linda Bennie. They were great folks and quite active in helping the island people

Jim is working on establishing a World War II Museum, and Linda works with the local hospital with prenatal care.

We flew then to Tanna Island to visit one of the longest erupting volcanoes in the world

On Tanna ,We stayed in a remote resort only about half an hour from Mount Yasur, the active volcano

We stayed at Friendly Beach "resort"- for rooms that were rebuilt after hurricane Pam in 2015. Very basic but ours were the only footprints on a beautiful black sand beach.

We then drove up a ridiculous four-wheel-drive trail to the side of the smoking volcano

Luckily, they had 59 mile an hour winds on the summit blowing the poisonous gases in the other direction

As you can see we're pretty windblown but the wind did help with the poisonous gases and Volkswagen size projectile's flying through the air

It really got pretty at night although the only thing between us and a lake of molten lava was a 3 inch pole painted white

We spent our last week there on the other side of the island at a beautiful little resort called White grass resort

We spent my birthday sipping Rombauer wine and watching an incredibly beautiful sunset over the coral sea

We even found a beautiful blue grotto we could hike to and snorkel or dive in

One day we took a four-wheel-drive vehicle four hours up into the interior of the island

the entire island is populated with small villages scattered around the island far from civilization

He wore only a feather stuck in his hair and a "Namus", which is a woven cone which protects his privates
