The pride had taken a giraffe, and they guarded their feast for days. I had several occasions to check in with them and draw the scene up close- say, a dozen feet or so from the vehicle. Vultures soaring overhead had led us to them, several taking up positions in the trees' branches close by. The lions ate, drank, and slept unconcerned about my scrutiny.
It's really quite something to observe the sisterhood close at hand. No other cat works in teams. No other cat shares child rearing. The females will have each others' backs for all of their lives. So inspiring.
