Houston Painted Dog Benefit

Jim and I were invited to a wonderful dinner to benefit African wild dogs in Houston, Texas. Dr. Greg Rasmussen is quite a character and one of the most well-known advocates and researchers of the so-called painted dogs.

Jim and I were invited to a wonderful dinner to benefit African wild dogs in Houston, Texas. Dr. Greg Rasmussen is quite a character and one of the most well-known advocates and researchers of the painted dogs.

The canines once numbered around 15 million in Africa. Today, due to hunting and their susceptibility to canine diseases, less than 3,000 dogs roam the continent. They are beautiful, unique and an important part of African ecology.

Rob and his wife Kathryn fell in love with painted dogs in Africa last year and put together a wonderful benefit dinner to help Greg's wild dog education and research facility in Victoria Falls.

I was proud to be able to speak on behalf of this magnificent species.

I was very grateful that two of my pieces helped raise several thousand dollars for Greg's facility in Africa. Greg promised our group of friends some extraordinary painted dog experiences when we visit him next May.

After the benefit, we went to a wonderful afterparty at the home of Amanda Brock and her husband Rob.

We brought a Mardi Gras King cake, which was enjoyed by all. An exchange student from Kenyan got the plastic baby doll inside the cake, so the next party will be in Kenya.

Several years ago, Greg was in an ultralight aircraft over the bush country of Zimbabwe, looking for poachers. He crashed and spent 36 hours in the desert, with over 30 broken bones in his feet and legs, fighting off hyenas and lions before his rescue.

I love wild dogs and painted this young pup especially for the wild dog benefit. I was so happy it will live with our good friends, Amanda and Rob.
